I've been using Nulon 10W-40 full synthetic in the 380 6G75 motor and found it to be long lasting. Thats subjective and based on the colour of it, but it always looks clean on the dipstick and when drained it still looks serviceable, not black as hell.
My view these days is that the premium brand full synthetics are the best choice and you just need to pick one or two that you like. I tend to go with 10W-40 grade in the 380 motor.
I frequently, at least every 6 months or 7000 k's whichever comes first, replace the engine oil myself using a siphon. Thats frequent I know, but thats what I want. I cant do a drain from the sump at my apartment building because theres no working space around the car and I wouldnt trust all the transients walking around to keep clear of the car or the jack while I'm under there. I've found the siphon method is quick, takes about 20 mins and gets nearly 4.5 litres or more out which must be most of it, so its pretty easy to do.
This means the filter gets replaced every other service by my mechanic, about every 12 months say.
Well this past week I had some service items done by the mechanic including getting the filter replaced and the oil drained. He insists on using his own oil because its all setup in drums in his workshop with hoses and easier for him, which is fine because I just siphon it out afterwards and put my own preferred oil in so that I'm happy.
He used Magnatec "Pro" this time. I dk what that is but assume its the budget mineral variiety. What is up with this oil? I must have driven it no more than about 50km's before draining it out and it was black! I mean really dark. It looked reasonable on the dipstick, a little dark, but once out in a container you could see its pretty much black.
Theres a few possibilities;
1. Maybe its dark to begin with?
Anyone know?
2. Maybe its darkening on first use by design?
Something in the oil goes dark once heated up?
3. Maybe its got a lot of cleansing agents in it and its doing more cleaning than other oils?
But I cant believe the motor is that dirty! And surely too much cleaning agents cant be good either!
I mean, it was no more than about 50k's. Its a mystery to me. I'm just not expecting it to be that dark after one trip!
If anyone has experience with this oil let me know.
Put the Nulon in and drove it until it warmed up, a few k's, came back and drained a little out and it looks like new, as you'd expect.
